How to REALLY put out a campfire!

Apr 19, 2018 02:42PM ● By Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux
First of all, build a campfire that you can enjoy! Too much fuel creates a fire that you can't get too close to, so keep it small! The Forest Service says that campfires shouldn't be larger than 3 ft x 3ft, meaning that flames shouldn't be higher than three feet from the ground.

Secondly, put your fire in an approved location, like a firegrate. If there is no firegrate or established pit, then build your fire on mineral soil away from roots as they can conduct fire several feet away from the burning area and could start a wildfire.
