Portions of MN Highway 1 Closed for Reconstruction.

Highway 1 reconstruction project is anticipated to begin July 10th, 2017.  Project area is from the South Kawishiwi River south approximately 4.5 miles and from Isabella west approximately 13.5 miles. Forest visitors can expect delays as they will be restricted to a single lane of traffic in each direction.  MNDOT’s estimated completion date is September 2018. Map of closures

Summary of work

  • Resurface pavement
  • Replace failing culverts
  • Remove rock outcroppings that are located near the highway shoulders
  • Minor ditching and slope work

Tree clearing and highway right of way

The project does not involve realigning or widening the highway. No extensive tree clearing will be done. There is no right of way or easements for Hwy 1 in the project areas. MnDOT is acquiring right of way from private property owners and easements from the Superior National Forest and from the Department of Natural Resources on State Forest lands.
